A day in the huerta with a hands-on programme to learn farm work, get to know plants and appreciate the farmer’s job.

Field activities

Tiger nuts
Tiger nuts are our speciality. From October to March pupils help grow and harvest them and, once dried in the cambra, turn and sort them.
Sowing
How seasonal crops are sown, tilled, watered and harvested, taking part directly in every step.
Crops
Watch crops develop, identify the parts of a plant and their functions, and discover which part we eat.
The soil
What soil is made of, mixing earth and natural fertiliser.
The tools
We have turned the old henhouse into a tool room where pupils learn to use the right tool for each task.

Scale model of the Valencian irrigation channels

Water and the Water Tribunal

We pay special attention to the irrigation system inherited from Al-Andalus. With a recreated irrigation channel and its plants —irises, reeds, cane— we explain traditional flood irrigation.

One of our rooms holds a scale model of the eight channels that form the irrigation system of the Valencian plain and the Water Tribunal, listed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. We explain its history, importance and how it works.

Workshops

Tiger nuts, the signature crop of the area, get a section of their own, plus a choice of workshops:

Food workshop
Preserves, horchata and tasting the vegetables picked in the field.
Crafts
Adobe bricks (mud and straw), scarecrows, kites…
Traditional games
Classic outdoor games in the middle of the huerta.

At the end of the day every child takes home their crafts and a bag of the vegetables they harvested.
